Why the tax behind your uncooked pizza matters

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

Lawmakers are trying to eliminate the sales tax on uncooked pizzas.

There's no tax on an uncooked pizza made outside a restaurant, but if the pizza was made on site, there is sales tax on it -- like at Papa Murphy's.

"So why not have a standard that says OK, if this  is what you have, no matter where you buy it or who the vendor is, you don't pay tax," said Dennis Raymond, who lives in Ballard.

Democratic Sen. Marko Liias, Republican Sen. Anna Rivers, and Democratic Sen. Annette Cleveland are the sponsors of SB 5861 that would allow the change.

It would apply to any uncooked prepared food.

They say the tax hurts local business owners.

Glenn Sutt owns two Papa Murphy's franchises in Olympia and one in Shelton. He says untaxed uncooked frozen pizzas are usually shipped in from companies out of state.

He also points out that people can buy Papa Murphy's take and bake pizzas using government EBT benefit cards.

Sutt says if the state stops charging a sales tax on uncooked pizzas, this would allow people to buy more food.
