A man known to police was arrested early Friday morning after police said he tried to steal a bike from a Woodinville business.
About 1:45 a.m. a Woodinville officer was on patrol when he saw a ladder against the front of a business in the 17500 Block of 132nd Ave, according to officers.
The business, Woodinville Bicycle collects donation for the Village Bicycle Project and stores them under a canopy in the front of their shop.
"He could see a man standing on the ladder reaching up attempting to take a bicycle off the hooks attached to the building," according to a department statement on Facebook. "The officer pulled into the parking lot at which point the suspect jumped off the ladder and walked away."
The attempted theft and police arrival was captured on surveillance footage, which the Woodinville Bicycle staff put together with sounds from Law and Order and The Benny Hill Show. Follow this link to see the video from Woodinville Bicycle. (The time on the video is in the 4 a.m. hour.)
“The officer activated his overhead lights at which point the suspect took off running. The officer gave chase on foot. The officer caught up to the suspect at the Woodinville cemetery and ordered him to the ground. The suspect did not comply rather walked towards the officer with his hands in his pockets then turned suddenly and ran into the cemetery.”
Police said the officer followed the man into the cemetery and “escorted him to the ground.”
“The suspect continued to resist as the officer attempted to gain control of his hands,” according to the police statement. “After a brief struggle a King County Sheriff deputy arrived and assisted placing handcuffs on the suspect.”
Officers said they recognized the suspect from a number of contacts with him “in and around the city often times during the early morning hours.”
“As the officers were placing the suspect into the patrol car the suspect was yelling and at one point reared back and kicked one of the officers,” according to the police statement. “Once inside the patrol car the suspect began to kick the door of the patrol car and the window before finally calming down.”
The 21-year-old suspect was booked into King County Jail for investigation of attempted theft and assault.
