RENO, Nevada — Hundreds of "workampers" who travel in recreational vehicles to seasonal jobs are camped out near an Amazon.com fulfillment center outside of Reno, Nevada.
About 250 semi-retired people who travel in their RVs are camped at an RV park while they work at the fulfillment center, earning $12 an hour, plus benefits. Amazon pays for their spot at the park.
"It's far more economical to live this way than it is in a stick house," said Kellie Gunn, a so-called Amazon Workamper.
"Just insurance alone and taxes on property and so forth," said Walt Gunn.
A small but growing number of work campers are younger people who have been forced out of jobs by the recession.
