SEATTLE — Friday is opening day for the Seattle Mariners, who will take on the Oakland Athletics at T-Mobile Park.
They took on the Angels Thursday for the final game of the series. The M's jumped to a quick 3-0 lead and kept that going through most of the game.
They won 8-5 after a battle of runs in the ninth. The Mariners are now 3-and-4 for the season.
There are just 60 games this year, 40 games against the American League West and 20 games against the National League West as Major League Baseball teams play within their geographic regions.
Because of COVID-19, fans won’t be allowed in the stands, but there will still be lots of fanfare ahead of the first pitch.
Seattle’s own Ben Gibbard will perform and the first pitch will be thrown by Governor Jay Inslee.
Pregame festivities will start around 6 p.m.
The Mariner's tradition of a run around the bases will also happen with a child from Snohomish County from the Make A Wish foundation. They recorded her run previously when the stadium was empty.
With no fans allowed in the stands, the M’s have been charging $30 to get a custom cutout of your face in a seat at T-Mobile Park.
It’s part of what’s being billed as the Seat Fleet program. The team says its raised more than $40,000 and that number is still rising. It translates to more than 1,300 fan cutouts.
A portion of the proceeds is being directed to the "All in Washington" COVID-19 relief efforts.
