Weekend Revive I-5, I-405 closures expected to cause big traffic headaches

SEATTLE, NEWCASTLE, Wash. — Major closures of Interstate 5 in South Seattle and Interstate 405 on the Eastside this weekend are likely to cause big frustrations for drivers.

Starting at 11 p.m. Friday through 10 p.m. Saturday, all lanes in both directions of I-405 at Lake Washington Boulevard Southeast, and 112th Avenue Southeast (exit 9) in Newcastle will be closed.

Crews will replace a collapsed culvert.

From 11 p.m. Saturday through 9 p.m. Sunday, the Lake Washington Boulevard on ramp to northbound I-405 will be closed.

Those coming from the Eastside to attend the 4:30 p.m. Huskies football home game against Michigan State on Saturday will want to leave early.

There are also Revive I-5 closures this weekend, but it’s a light version.

One right lane on southbound I-5 in Seattle near the Columbian Way/West Seattle Bridge offramps will close. The Columbian Way/West Seattle Bridge offramps will also close.

Work is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, and finish by 6 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.

The work is weather-dependent and could be canceled for rain.

The Revive I-5 work will finish early this weekend to accommodate the reopening of the West Seattle Bridge, which has been closed since March 23, 2020.

“We will be off the road before the anticipated opening of the West Seattle Bridge,” WSDOT said in a tweet.

The problems started during a routine inspection when crews discovered large-scale cracks in the West Seattle Bridge’s surface.

The bridge has been closed for 30 months.

There are also concerts in Seattle and Woodinville, as well as the ongoing Washington State Fair in Puyallup.
